Is it right to steal someones pet if its being neglected?

A small pet. Like a mouse or bird. Something you cant call the police about. I had a friend who didn't take care of her leopard gecko properly. And any attempt i made to educate her on the proper care she wouldn't listen. I was thinking about stealing it but I didn't have an extra cage or any extra supplies. Than she moved. The gecko later died and it wasn't even 1 yet.
