Is it ok to snip my tulip stems with pruning sheers? The tulips died off a month ago but the ugly stems are?

the ugly brown stem and leaves are still standing tall and are an eyes sore.. is it ok to just take my pruning sheers and snip the stem down to the grown? Will it kill or hurt the bulb and prevent it from coming back next year if I snip them?
