I had to lop off the top of my Cryptomeria japonica Yoshino, now what?

My 7-foot Cryptomeria suffered bad winter damage and the top three feet of the leader and branches were totally dead, so I had to prune them all off. I realize that Cryptomeria can be coppiced, so I suppose this means it's going to sprout new growth from the cut. This is going to look even worse than it looks now, I'm afraid. Any suggestions on further pruning to save the look of this tree? Left alone and in good health, it would have grown to about 40-60 feet and have a pyramid shape like a spruce.
