Can I kill my nectarine tree by over-pruning?

I have several large nectarine trees which have never been pruned. They are now too large for their location. Can I prune them back severly (ie several year's growth) without killing them? I am happy to forefit next season's crop if that is the consequence- but if I give them a massive prune will they continue to fruit into the future?
