Backpacking Australia?

Hey, i am planning to go to Australia in january for a year on a working holiday visa, i was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on where would be the best place to start? many people have said Cairns as it is a good way to meet people, where others have said Melbourne. any suggestions/information would be great!
